Assessment & grading:

Fall semester

  • 10% average grade for autumn in-class quizzes (typically
  • written at the start of each class), rounded to nearest integer
  • 10% average grade for autumn home assignments (6 or 7
  • HAs), rounded to nearest integer
  • 25% autumn mid-term test
  • 55% final winter test
  • plus Fall semester bonus points (a student may earn up to 5 of them per semester, mainly for successful in-class performance at the whiteboard)

Spring semester

  • 10% average grade for spring in-class quizzes (typically
  • written at the start of each class), rounded to nearest integer
  • 10% average grade for spring home assignments (5 or 6 HAs),
  • rounded to nearest integer
  • 20% spring mid-term test
  • 60% final spring test
  • plus Spring semester bonus points (a student may earn up to 5 of them per semester, mainly for successful in-class performance at the whiteboard)

The result for each semester is a number between 0 and 100 (if it exceeds 100, it is truncated to 100), which is then converted to standard HSE 0-10 scale according to the following scheme:

0-10% -> 1 point, 11-20% -> 2 pts, 21-30% -> 3 pts, 31-40% -> 4 pts, 41-50% -> 5 pts, 51-60% -> 6 pts, 61-70% -> 7 pts, 71-85% -> 8 pts, 85-95% -> 9 pts, over 95% -> 10 pts.

This conversion scheme may be adjusted by the lecturer depending on the actual distribution of percentage grades for specific semester. It may be adjusted differently for Fall and Spring semesters.
